Diverse music videos - Miss Miller

Intro:

A diverse and unique music video means that it is unlikely that the video fits in with the generic conventions.

Chris Cunningham
Cunningham has primarily directed music videos for ambient music and electronica acts such as Autechre and Aphex Twin. He has also created art installations and directed short movies. He was approached to direct a movie version of the cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, but nothing came of early discussions. In the 2000s, Cunningham began doing music production work. He has also designed album artwork for a variety of musicians.

Madonna - Frozen

The music video is not conventional as Madonna is a pop artist. Due to the dark clothing and setting, it represents the title of the song 'frozen' as she is so pale she looks cold and lifeless. I would say that the lyrics and the visuals correspond eachother as she has very still-like body language throughout, not moving very much. This song is performance and concept base as she is singing throughout, and it is concept as she wants the audience to understand hw she feels, which is dark and depressed at that time. The Genre of this video isn't conventional to pop as it is not upbeat or happy, However she is not revealing which is conventional to the pop genre. Throughout, close-ups are used, this is so it helps to build a relationship with the artist as you can see how sad she feels through her facial expressions.

Aphex Twin - Window Licker

This music video is not conventionalto the trance/electro genre as the artists is using inapropriate language throughout, Aphez would be seen as quite promiscious, however their is a dance routine which is conventional. This video would be narrative and performance based as he sings and dances into the camera and his lyrics are in french with his girlfriend sying how she likes dogs. The visuals match the beat and likes to use a lot of close-ups, this is again so the audience can build a relationshop with the artist.

Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy

This music video would be seen as subversive to the electro pop genre as the video starts off with an old lady walking with her scary dog. This video contains no lyrics what so ever it is all about the beat and the visuals. I also think that this video is very dark and disturbing also again not being conventional to the genre. It includes intetexual visual of face on TV which is quite a clever thing to include as cunninghams videos are diverse, hardly any artists at this time would use this in their videos, this is what makes cunningham unique and people want to carry on viewing as it is different to what they have ever viewed before. It is narrative and concept based with no performance, in a way it is trying to alert the audience that media controls the universe at this present time and wants the audience to understand that it shouldn't. Many people are attracted to cunninghams style, this is why Aphex gets alot of views.

Micheal Gondry
Michel Gondry (born 8 May 1963) is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is noted for his inventive visual style and distinctive manipulation of mise en scène.He is well known for his music video collaborations with The Chemical Brothers, Björk and The White Stripes.

The White Stripes - The hardest button to button

This music video is performance base, it is conventional to the genre of Rock as it is a boy band, each playing a different instrument and also using colours such as red and black. However the setting is subversive as it is being filmed in many locations, on the street and train, where as most rock videos a filmed on stage to an audience. They are unorthodix artists which can help the audience to relate as they are down to earth, normal people with a simplistic lifestyle. This band also use a lot of close ups while performing.

Kylie Minogue - Come into my world

This video is narrative, concept and performance base. It is narrative based because she is veing filmed in simple clothes walking along an urban street whilst singing 'welcome to my world' this is because she wants the audience to understand she isn't a flashy person and that she also lives a normal lifestyle, it is performance based as she is constantly singing and dancing but not into the camera. However it is subversive to pop as the song is quite repetitive and he is wearing very simple clothing, wanting to get across to the audience thst she is a simple women and that its not all about the money, this can help her build a fan base as the audience can build a relationship with her. Close ups of her face are used but she is acting asif the camera isn't there, this makes her come across as down to earth and simple.

Conclusion

I think that the industry is the main reason why artists choose to create diverse music for the one reason that it makes them stand out and be unique, many artists nowadays have similar interests, and so create similar music for example many rappers like to include the finer things in life in their videos such as private jets, big mansions and money. This isn't being unique and the audience struggle to build a relationship with the artist as they can relate to their choice of lifestyle.

Research into Goodwin's music theory - Miss Georgiou

Intro:

Andrew Goodwins theory allows us to analyse music videos concentrating on 7 main principles:
Link between lyrics and visuals
Links between music and visuals
Genre characteristics
intertextuality reference
voyeurism
Demand of the record label
Performance, Narrative or concept based videos.
He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals, lyrics and the music plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require, this is why Goodwin's theory is essential.
Main:
Drake - Hold On were going home.
The genre of this music video is R'n'B.

1)  Genre Characteristics- This music video is conventional as it is a man singing about a girl, it is also not a stage performance which is something that R'n'B singers tend not to do. For example a video of a stage performance is typical for a metal video, a dance routine is typical foe a boy/girl band and flashy mansions, pretty girls and sports cars for rap/R'n'B videos. This video shows the artist to be living a wealthy lifestyle by the way he is dressed and his house, which is conventional to the genre.

2) Relationship between lyrics and visuals- I agree that there is a relationship between these two things as the song is about a gang kidnapping Drakes girlfriend, and he leaves the restaurant to go home and try to save her, as the chorus says 'just hold on, were going home', as if he is sending a message to his girlfriend saying 'I'm coming to find you, hold on'. This appeals to its target audience of teenagers as the video creates suspense for the audience to view, also this age group are intrigued by weapons and explosions what is what this video includes.

3) Relationship between music and visuals-  The relationship between these two are illustrative as the beat of the music matches the video. Towards the end of the song, Drake and his friends start firing guns at the villains, at this point the lyrics have stopped playing and all you can hear is gun shots being fired as it starts to go quiet, as i've now seen the video i can understand why the guns are being fired. This appeals to the target audience as it helps us to build a relationship with the artist as the story in which he is trying to tell can infect happen in real life, which makes it exciting for the audience to watch.

4) The demands of the Record Label- The Record Label has a certain control over the artists they sign, it is ultimately up to the record label to decide what the artist should be represented as. For example, towards the end of Drakes video he is shown to be wearing a black vest top whilst he is fighting, this is to make him come across as strong and powerful, also making him look attractive so he can pick up a mainstream audience of women which is what Drake manages to do successfully. Throughout, there is also many close-ups of Drake, this is so the audience can see and feel how he is feeling, so he is able to connect with his fans through different camera techniques which is appealing for his target audience to watch.

5) Notion of looking- Notion of looking plays on the idea of gaze and the way someone in particular is seen. For example, in a lot of music video's women are often presented according to Goodwin as 'objects', however it is not just retricted to women, it may also represent men in a particular way such as controlling or violent. In this video, Goodwin's theory is being used as their is a lot of violence throughout on both men and women. I would say that the audience look at Drakes girlfriend in this video in an voyeuristic way as it doesn't seem that Drake himself realises the way that she is dressed is promiscuous, however this is a way for him to attract a male audience as well as female.

6) Intertexual reference- There is no references to films, TV programmes and other music videos. There is no references that match Goodwin's theory.

7) Performance/Concept/Narrative based- I would say that this music video is narrative based only. I wouldn't say that it is performance base because at no point in the video does he sing into the camera or dance, however it is narrative as he is trying to tell a story, he sets out on a mission to kill the men who took his girlfriend and get her home safely. This appeals to his target audience as this makes the audience build a relationship with him, as he is the hero in the story, not the villain.

Conclusion-

Goodwin's Theory will help to assist me when it comes to filming my own music video as he follows the 7 steps one by one, they are simple to understand if you follow them correctly then theirs no reason why my music video wouldn't be successful. The characteristics that I will include will match with the music and visuals in my video, once I know for sure what genre i've chosen it will be a lot easier to then break down and follow Goodwin's theory. I know understand all the different kind of elements which are essential to include in order to make it successful.

Censorship - Miss Miller

Intro:

Censorship is where certain elements of for example, a music video has been cut out or lyrics have been bleeped due to inappropriate behaviour from the artists that shouldn't be seen by young children, this is too protect them from viewing things such as drugs, sex and violence as we don't want to give them the wrong impression that it's ok to do when it's not.
Offcom is the regulator and competition authority for UK communication industries. It regulates TV and radio, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services and the airwaves which wireless devices use. People who watch television and listen to the radio are protected from harmful or defensive material. Ofcom has legal powers to enforce the law and penalties imposed by the courts can be severe. Offences tried in a magistrate's court attract a maximum penalty of (GBP) 5,000 and/or imprisonment for a maximum term of 51 weeks.
An example where censorship is used in an artists video is 'Eminem - The Monster', this video has explicit visuals as well as lyrics. Within the first 30 seconds of the explicit version it shows Eminem taking cocaine and pills, I then watched the clean version and i and noticed that the short 5 seconds of him taking drugs had been cut out. This is an example where censorship has taken place.

Main:
1) Eminem- I am against Censorship in every way, I will say what I want to say when I want, none can stop me. When i make my music, i sit and listen to the beat and see how it feels, I don't intentionally write aggressive music on purpose because thats not being true to who you are, artists that do purposely write aggressive lyrics shouldn't have the privilege to make music and attract a fan base. The music i have produced and brought out to my fans is the reason I am where I am today, and i thank them for that because I'm more successful than ever and I feel I have achieved all my inspirations, I want to get across to my fans that being motivated and self driven can be possible if you work hard. In the past I have had a hard up-bringing, which has brought me a lot of negativity, this is why sometimes the lyrics to my songs are depressing as I want my fans to know my story so they can relate to how I'm feeling, with censorship taking place on my music is defeating the whole point of why I write music, the song becomes off beat and then dosen't make sense, it is very frustrating. I don't say or do things to shock people, so i may talk about killing people and taking drugs but that's not to take literally, people should know that I am joking it's not my problem if they don't. This is why I am against censorship, as any negativity, I release through my lyrics as an artist you should be able to express what you want, it is the parents job to protect them.

2) Record label- The record label is named 'Shady Records' Eminem decided to make his own label as he felt under pressure about censorship, other record labels in the past wanted to change Eminems' music to another degree which is was really not happy about. The main reason we feel that music censorship is a complete waste of time is due to how successful Eminem has become due to his explicit lyrics and visuals, it is clear that the audience likes contraversy otherwise his music wouldn't be so popular. Books aren't censored so why should music be, a book is deeper so surely that would do more damage? Eminem had signed many popular artists to Shady Records such as 50 Cent, which is best known for his song 'Candy Shop' which is highly explicit and a clean version was never made, this should tell you by how popular and successful the song was that actually the public do not feel that censorship is relevant. Many acts from Shady Records have received lots of rewards.

3) Parent FOR- First of all, I don't want my child to be exposed to foul language and racist remarks, by protecting it, we are protecting the innocence of a child. I want my child to be able to view whatever music they wish to on sites such as YouTube without me having too worry about them viewing any inappropriate content. In this generation, children as young as 7 are listening to and talking about inappropriate music. If you raise your child to be brought up with rude music, then this could attract them to start swearing and getting involved in things such as drugs and sexual activity far too early. If you want to listen to it, then you can buy the CD or download it on iTunes instead of exposing it to young audiences. I personally feel that if it had to come down to it, 2 different albums should be made, 1 that is censored for the youth still developing, and one uncensored for the mature listeners. This only really applies to certain artists such as Eminem and Rihanna that I personally feel, take their music a step to far.

4) Parents AGAINST- The main point that I want to get across, is that children pick up on everything do easily, I feel that having artists feature things such as drugs and violence will help educate kids to understand that it is bad, after all we don't want nieve children. One thing that I would suggest to worried parents is to add pass-codes to websites and your TV so you can control what you children are viewing, you could also have the computer based somewhere like your living room, so you can constantly see what they are viewing online. However, to me I feel that this is a complete waste of time as your kids will eventually pick up on everything that could be shown in music videos so surely it's better now than later, this could turn into a positive thing as it teaches children what is right and wrong. Simply do not listen to it or keep it in your house -or just keep it away from your children. If u shelter a teenager that bad then you might as well take them out of school, as a teen, nowhere is safe for teenagers, so might as well let them like what they like!

5) Fans- Music is a way to express Eminems' opinion, censorship is stopping him putting out what he wants and feels. Eminem had some bad press about a song that he wrote called 'Kim' where he talks about killing his wife, but I dont understand why people are being so negative about him as he doesn't actually do the things he says in his lyrics, the public should be clever enough to work that out. His raps talks about his personal life like an open letter, this is a bonus as fans are able to keep taps on him and constantly be in the loop with Eminem and his music. By censoring his songs leads to massive negatives, suggested meanings that aren't obvious to fans could cause people struggling to understand Eminems' lyrics, it can also make the song loose rhythum and takes the effect away. Eminem is clearly very passionate about his music, he enjoys to push the boundaries of his creative freedom which i think is a good thing as I feel many artists are too afraid to come out of their shell because their scared of what could happen to their reputation, this is what makes Eminem different he is real and truly stands for what he believes in. This should inspire people to be creative and to not hold back in life.

6) MTV FOR- We agrees strongly about censorship, they have to take into account that young kids are watching the music channel, because of this they censor the music videos, visual and lyrics all day until 9pm. Eminem's songs are controversial, because of this MTV doesn't play his songs often, in one of Eminem's songs 'Rap Game', it talks about him threatening to destroy the white house, due to how illegal it is what he's rapping about, the song had to completely be censored otherwise no music channel would play it, especially MTV. In another one of his songs, he talks about the shooting of the children at school in 1999, his lyrics couldn't be played at all due to how inappropriate it is. He is also very homophobic which is a lot more understanding nowadays, this can create a lot of haters which are Gay themselves. Also Eminem was seen in an interview saying that he should be able to 'illuminate women' which is highly offensive to women as we are all equals, and should be treated the same. Due to this we don't want to air this sort of person as it is not taken as a joke, and is very serious, Eminem needs to be careful what he says as one day it can get him into a lot of trouble.

AKA- We disagree that censorship should be used upon music videos. Our main aim as a music channel is we want to allow our artists to express whatever they feel, whether it is happiness or pain, if inappropriate language needs to be used then so be it we are completely supportive of the artists we air. Many of the artists we show are fresh and new so if we don't allow them to express themselves then they can't be shown fully who they are. We've learnt things from the past, that aren't acceptable to showing as we received an £18,000 fine due to airing something that was apparently 'too explicit' however this hasn't changed our mind about censorship if anything it has made us stand up for what we believe in and be proud. The music which we air is mainly urban and grime, from artists such as Skepta and JME. If their lyrics are censored, then ideas behind the dogs can't be shown to its full extent, a lot of the artists rap about past experiences and their life stories. The music is contriversial, if we don't allow this the artists struggle to get bigger as they are intact starting from the very bottom, with no stable platform to help them get their music out.

7) BBC Radio 1- Censorship is a very important aspect that we as BBC take very seriously, artists such as Eminem rap about things that we shouldn't glorify to the public, things such as rape and flattening women have been said in his songs which we feel is truly disgusting, why would we want to play this to the public, its an insult to think that anyone would question it. I'd rather the radio channel shut down then play music like that, it also reflects very badly on us. Children shouldn't be exposed to drugs as they don't know how serious it actually is, we also feel that some artists are just wanting promotion and a pay cheque and couldn't care less about their lyrics, so does not matter to them what gets said and if it is suitable or not.

Capital Xtra- Generally we don't take censorship that seriously, we tend to allow minor bad language to be aired. This station focuses on the chart music, but more specifically the rap genre such as urban and R'n'B, airing artists such as Drake, Notorious B.I.G and Nicki Minaj. We allow some sexual references but to a degree, so don't use strict radio versions. For example, Ushers song 'OMG' uses the words 'oh my god', but in some versions, 'gosh' is used instead so it doesn't offend people.

Conclusion:

From the 7 points listed above, the general view that I'm getting is more think that censorship is a bad idea then a good, which is something that I completely agree on, I think that censoring music defeats what artists are trying to get out to the fans, with many of them being able to relate what they are saying through their music, I think censoring all music would leave people angry and frustrated as they struggle to understand what the artist is trying to get across and therefore cannot build a relationship with the artist. If parents are worried about their child viewing it then they should block certain websites  on the computer and also the TV, it is not fair on the other people that don't want to listen to censored music. I think that to a certain degree, I will censor my own music video for the fact that the genre is house so nothing inappropriate needs to be shown visually and through lyrics, however I won't know for sure until it comes to the production.

What is a music video - Miss Miller

Intro

A music video is a short film/video that is used to accompany a piece of music, it usually lasts between 3-4 minutes depending on the length of the song.  The main purpose of music videos are that they are primarily used to market and promote the sale of music recordings, but to also entertain the audience, identifying the artist and showing off their fun side. There are 3 different styles which a music video is likely to consist of; 1. Performance (singing/dancing), 2. A narrative (where the artist is telling the audience a story), 3. Concept (selling the audience an idea).

Main

The music video which i will be analysing is "Mariah Carey - Touch My Body", the genre of this music video would be classed as Hip Hop. The purpose of this video is to show the audience Mariah's seductive side as most of her videos in the past are the complete opposite as she likes to tell the audience her story. In this video mariah is dressed in a sexy school girl outfit, dressing quite revealing showing her skin a lot. Most of it is filmed in a huge mansion in California which she actually owned herself, so this tells me she's materialistic, she wants the audience to buy into her lifestyle so she can connect with them. The style of this music video is mainly Performance as she is singing, dancing and having a good time throughout providing entertainment for the audience. The codes and conventions of the Hip Hop genre is that the musics often loud, smooth/upbeat and offers a catchy chorus. Mariah has adapted all of these conventions in her video. I think that this music video appeals to the target audience of teenagers, due to the fact it's materialistic, showing off her money, the way she is dressed promiscuously to the man she is trying to seduce in her video. The Hip Hop genre itself attracts a younger audience.

Conclusion

From this video, i have learnt that promoting the artist in a specific way could lead to appealing to different target audiences, due to Mariah's clothing and dancing quite seductively it may put her older target audience off from viewing this video or listening to the song, however in many videos she has made in the past they have promoted to a range of different ages. I have also learnt the conventions of what a HipHop video tends to consist of, being highly entertaining throughout. I think that music videos are highly effecting as it is a way of marketing the song and promoting it to their target audience,  it's a way of making a large profit, if the song does become a big success, however it is a big risk as the record label could lose a lot of money. As a result of this, either HipHop or House music would be the genre i may consider when producing my own music video, as I would want to target my audience to teenagers, these 2 genres are the most popular with that age group.

History of music videos - Miss Georgiou

Intro:

The audience can consume music videos in many ways, this depense on how the video is seen, for example on social media, this is done mainly through the use of smart phones, being able to download the Youtube app and watch any music video the public want whenever they like, due to how much technology has developed over the years and being able to see videos through smart phones, it has created an impact on the amount of views the artist gets on their videos and the profit in which they make, this has changed quite dramatically through recent years.

Main:

1981- The first music channel which was ever created was called 'MTV' which occurred on the 1st August, the original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys," In its early years, MTV's main target demographic were young adults, but today, MTV's programming is primarily targeted at teenagers.

Youtube- The most watched music videos:

Psy's song, 'Gangnam Style'  is the most watched music video on youtube of all time, receiving over 2.3 billion views since it was uploaded July 15, 2012. This was due to the fact it was filmed in China, with the whole of the Chinese population giving their support, the song then broke through into other countries such as the UK and USA. This is due to the fact the song is highly entertaining and catching, having an easy dance routine that the audience can easily join in with.

The average cost of a music video:

A music video on average costs between $200,000-$500,000.

Estimated production costs:
  • Producer fee: $500 – $1250/day
  • Director fee: $500 – $1250/day
  • Camera operator: $500-1000/day
  • Camera equipment rental: $150 – $3500/day
  • Key grip + assistant + lighting gear: $1000 – $1750/day
  • Wardrobe: estimated $20 – $1000/day per character project
  • City permits: $25 – $1000/day (depending on the city, exact location, whether roads need to be closed, etc…)
  • Location fees and rentals: $250 – $2500+/day
  • Actors: $200 – $1200/day (each)
  • Extras: $50 – $200/day (each)

Conclusion:

Doing this research has helped me to come to a better understanding of how music videos are made and what you should include in them to create a wide target audience, you will know whether or not a music video is successful by the amount of view that it receives, with Pys receiving over 2 billion views on his song 'Gangnam style', it was the most talked about song of the year. It was also allow me to see through the publics perspective what they expect/enjoy to see in a music video, finding out their opinions could really help me assist me with things such as the setting and the props included.

Research into Music Channels - Miss Georgiou

Intro:

What's the purpose of having music channels?

The purpose of music channels on TV is so the public can decide what style of music that they want to listen to, for example if you wanted to listen to R'n'B/Hip Hop you can watch the KISS channel and if you want to listen to Rock you can watch the PlanetRock channel. It is also for the artist/group to promote their song to the public, it's also to make a profit, the more people viewing the more money the artist makes, and to also build a fan base, by viewing the music video it may make the public like the song and artist if it's not usually their preferred genre, this is so their fans can watch the music video and possibly build a relationship with the artist as, viewing their music video can help the audience to relate to what the artist wants to convey, this is something that a Radio station cannot do.

Main: MTV

The target audience consists of teenagers from an age between 13-21 year olds. MTV plays chart/popular music, they play the to 50 songs at that present time. Artists that would feature on a regular basis would be for example; Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Drake, Katy Perry and Rihanna. These artists appeal to the target audience as they are Hip Hop/Rap artists which generally attracts a younger crowd, they are all also highly entertaining to listen to. On the 16th June, different music programmes are aired to suit the target audiences interest, for example at 2pm One direction:Official Top 10, and at 3pm 2015's leading ladies top 10 is also on, their most popular TV programme that is aired a lot throughout the day is Teen Mom.

MTV is owned by Viacom Media Networks, this company owns many other channels such as; Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and BET Networks.

The MTV logo appeals to the target audience as it looks like its been graffitied, using black & white it makes the font bold and stand out.

AKA:

AKA is a significant channel not only for established artists, but also for those who are just starting out. Its material "includes crude productions shot with handheld digital video cameras," and helps new musicians attract attention and build a fan base. According to its website, "the aim of the channel was to highlight to the public, the raw and unsigned talent we have in the UK, and give them a platform from which they could perform, and help to get them some success as there are so many unknown artists in the UK that are so talented and are struggling to get their music heard, this is what AKA is built for.

AKA's target audience are from an age group of 15-25 year olds, I would say that it is mainly targeted for men as the rappers featured on this music channel like to rap about women often. The genre of this channel is grime, featuring rappers such as Skepta and JME.                Image result for jme

TV CHANNELS :

Clubland TV

It features upbeat pop (during the morning) and dance music videos and is based from the Clubland compilation albums. ClubLands target audience is from an age range of roughly 18-30 year olds, this is due to the fact a lot of the songs that ClubLand play are quite old, such as Cascada, Flip n Fill and N-Trance. These artists are going back to the 80's so many of them, the younger generation may not have heard of them. This is their programming schedule throughout the day:
  • Wake Up - Dance music to start the day.
  • Am2Pm - Non-stop house/techno/eurodance.
  • Clubland - A chance for viewers to request club music.
  • Mania - A selection of commercial dance music.
  • Classix - Classic Clubland tracks.
  • Blue Zone - Brand new house sounds from Clubland

VH1

VH1 is an American cable television network based in New York City that is owned by Viacom Music and Entertainment GroupFrom the start, Video Hits One was branded as an urban version of its sister/parent channel. It played more jazz and R&B artists than MTV and had a higher rotation of urban-contemporary performers. The channel launched 35 years ago, and include many different programmes throughout the channel such as VH1 divas where it includes artists such as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion, also Movies that Rock, which include artists such as Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
I would say that VH1's target audience is 30-50 year olds, just because of the programmes it airs on the channel and the artists, it's the music that the older generation enjoy as it is what they used to listen to when they was younger.

Magic

Magic is a British music television station owned by The Box Plus Network. It plays mainly easy listening music videos and is based on the Magic Radio network. Magic mainly focuses on music from the 80s, the 90s and the 00s. The channel is available on many platforms and is part of a network of channels owned by Box Television, which include 4Music, Kerrang! TV, Smash Hits, Heat, The Box, and Kiss. Magic plays artists such as Candi Staton and Take That, it plays many different programmes throughout the day such as;

  • The Mellow Magic Love Hour - 12.00-1.00
  • Mellow Magic- 1.00-4.00
  • Drivetime Magic- 5.00-8.00

Conclusion:

I think that the reason MTV have broken down the different genres into music channels to try to keep a wide audience and to keep the amount of viewers, for example a channel for rock and a different channel for dance so people can watch their preferred genre the whole time, I personally hate rock so if I was watching MTV as one music channel and Rock came on I would turn it off, that's why having a range of channels is appropriate as it stops that from happening with the public. Music channels are important to attracting the music's target audience as it allows them to see the video and it promotes the song on a wider scale, it allows the audience to build more of a relationship with the artist instead of just listening to the song on the radio, for artists its not the same thing, they want to be able to connect with their fans through the visuals of the song and lyrics, that is why music channels are important. I've learnt what artists have included in their videos such as props and people to contrast with the specific genre, for example the genre that I'm interested in using when producing my own music video is house/dance music, so I researched different music videos of this genre on YouTube and I found that there was a pattern of similar things being used in the videos, for example a DJ set was included, and many was either filmed in a nightclub with people dancing or at a concert, so possibly I will try to create something similar to this to promote to my target audience from a age of 16 to 25 year olds.
